St. Claire Monastery, officially the Real Monasterio de Santa Clara, sits along Katipunan Avenue in Loyola Heights, Quezon City, and was originally founded in 1621 in Intramuros, Manila, by Blessed Mother Jerónima de la Asunción as the first Catholic monastery in the Philippines. It moved to its current location in 1950 after World War II destroyed the original site, and the church is dedicated to St. Clare of Assisi, the patroness of the Poor Clares.
The monastery is famous for its tradition of devotees offering eggs in hopes of fair weather for special occasions, a practice tied to St. Clare’s name, which means “clear” or “bright.” Its Spanish-American mission-style architecture and quiet location near Ateneo de Manila University make it a peaceful pilgrimage spot, with Masses held in the early morning and late afternoon.
