Our Lady of Remedies Parish, better known as the Malate Church, was first built in 1588 by the Augustinian friars in what was then the village of Malate, Manila, and dedicated to Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, the patroness of childbirth. A revered statue of the Virgin Mary under this title was brought from Spain in 1624 and still stands at the high altar.
The church, a Mexican Baroque-style structure overlooking Plaza Rajah Sulayman and Manila Bay, has faced destruction from earthquakes, typhoons, and wars, including being burned during World War II, but was rebuilt in the 1950s by the Columban Fathers. Declared an Important Cultural Property in 2023, the church is known for its unique twisted columns and serves as a spiritual and historical landmark in the bustling Malate district.
